The airport operator page for João Paulo II Airport exists, but it is a JavaScript-rendered application that returned no content, so the number of rental agencies at PDL is not stated. Any figure you read elsewhere, such as a precise count of companies at the airport, is unverified by any official source. The same record publishes neither a list nor a count for the islands beyond São Miguel.

Book with a named company and check the pickup point before you pay, because there is nothing official to compare against. No daily rates exist in any official pack, so this page prints none. No official guidance exists on booking rental cars early for summer either, and our advice, labelled as such, is simply that summer Saturdays go first. In season, Caldeira Velha entrance is by prior reservation, with caps of 100 bathers in the thermal pools and 250 visitors on site at any one time. The Caldeira Velha guide has the ticket details. The closure and the lots

During the Shuttle Vulcão do Fogo season, which ran 1 August to 30 September 2026 with buses from 09:00 to 20:00 daily, the road between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água is closed to private visitors' vehicles. Only tour operators, travel agencies, taxis and residents may drive it and use the en-route car parks. Outside those months the restriction does not apply, and the Lagoa do Fogo guide tracks the year, so winter access rules differ.

Two of the most-searched venues publish almost nothing about parking, and that absence is the finding. Parque Terra Nostra states free parking for hotel guests only and nothing about day visitors. Poça da Dona Beija lists parking among services subject to availability, with no capacity or price published. In practice both Furnas sites mean street or village parking on busy afternoons, so arrive early or walk in from a distance.

The Sete Cidades viewpoints, by contrast, carry no fees anywhere in the parks network, and the Fogo lots below are free at their stated caps.

The Fogo lots, the one published table

The only official parking table in the packs belongs to the Lagoa do Fogo shuttle system, and it is the reason the mountain works at all in season.

What that means for a rental driver

In shuttle season those 161 free public spaces sit at the two ends of a road your rental cannot drive, so the practical move is parking at one end and riding the $9.17 (€8) shuttle up. Outside the season the restriction lapses and the same lots serve drivers directly, which the Lagoa do Fogo guide tracks through the year.

Atlânticoline serves ten ports and none of them is on São Miguel, so a rental picked up at PDL cannot island-hop by boat from the base island. The route list has no São Miguel port, full stop: the car you rent on São Miguel ends where it started, because Atlânticoline's own network map leaves the island out.

Some sailings on other routes do carry vehicles. Availability is shown as a percentage of the space occupied on the car deck, vehicles check in up to 20 minutes before departure, and none of the vehicle fares include the driver's ticket. No per-route fares are published. The triangle week of Faial, Pico and São Jorge works well without a car, and the routes are mapped on getting-around.

No official page publishes crash statistics, road-quality rankings or fuel prices for the Azores, so this page refuses those numbers. What the sources do show is the everyday driving environment, the hydrangea-lined narrow lanes you can see in the image on this page. The islands also sit 1 hour behind mainland Portugal, which shortens the winter driving day at both ends.

Keep one flexible day in your plan for weather closures, because the Caldeira Velha manager may close the facility for weather conditions. Season shapes the whole trip, and the best time to visit guide sets out the months. The routing hub is on plan.

Algar do Carvão is reached by drive, with no public transport published, and sits about 12 km from Angra do Heroísmo, so on Terceira the choice is a rental or a cave tour. Gruta do Natal sells no reservations or online sales. The ticket is $10.31 (€9.00) per person at the door, cash, Mastercard or Visa accepted, with capacity for 80 people inside, so a driver cannot prebook and queues are possible.

The official visitor centre at Sete Cidades rents no kayaks and no bikes: its published services list is exhibition, documentary, picnic area and facilities, with no watersports anywhere on it. The kayak offers you see online are private operators, not an official service, so a renter expecting to park and paddle from the lake shore is relying on a business the regional government does not run.

Two honest ways to get the activities. Book a bundled day that includes the gear, such as the jeep, bike and kayak day at $91.83, where the operator carries the equipment. Or split the day: drive or tour to the Sete Cidades viewpoints in the morning, and treat the water as a separate booking with a named operator. What the parks network will not sell you at the lake is a kayak, and now you know that before you drive there.

No official guidance exists on booking rental cars early for summer, and the honest page says so rather than inventing a rule of thumb. What can be said is arithmetic-free and simple: the islands have one airport handling most arrivals, and the summer weeks concentrate them. Our advice, labelled as advice, is that peak-season weeks and small fleets go first, so book when your flights are locked.

The one booking window that IS published on this island belongs to a garden, not a rental desk. Parque Terra Nostra releases its online tickets only 15 days ahead of the chosen date, which means the very plans a rental car serves book on a different clock than the car itself. Match the two: lock the car when flights are fixed, and diary the Terra Nostra ticket release if a Furnas day is in the plan.

No daily rental rate is published in any official source, so the only priced lines a planner can hold are the alternatives and the fixed ground costs. The Ponta Delgada tourist tax of $2.29 (€2.00) per guest per night, capped at 3 nights for guests 13 and over since January 2025, and VAT at 16% against the mainland's 23% are the two lines that attach to every trip.
