Lagoa do Fogo, São Miguel: The Road Rule, The Shuttle And The Hike

The reserve

Lagoa do Fogo is a crater lake set in the Água de Pau massif in the centre of São Miguel, between the municipalities of Ribeira Grande and Lagoa. The parks network and the regional tourism portal describe it as a protected nature reserve, and it is the wildest of the island's big crater lakes, with a white crater wall and no development on the shore. The hot springs of Caldeira Velha sit on its northern flank inside the same protected landscape.

The 2026 access regime

In the 2026 season the regional government restricts the road that crosses the massif. Between Caldeira Velha on the Ribeira Grande side and Casa da Água on the Lagoa side, private visitors' vehicles may not drive the road while the official shuttle operates. Only tour operators, travel agencies, taxis and residents may drive it and use the en-route car parks, and the Caldeira Velha entrance becomes entry with prior reservation in season.

What happens after the season

The restriction tracks the shuttle, so it applies only while the shuttle operates. Outside the published windows the shuttle does not run and the road rule does not apply either, which means winter access differs. The sources do not state the winter arrangements in detail, so re-check the official page before relying on a crossing drive outside the season dates.

Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo

This is the official shuttle stop on the crater rim and the classic panorama over the lake. From the platform you look straight down on the blue water, the pale crater walls and the unbuilt shore that makes this reserve feel remote compared with Sete Cidades. Every shuttle visitor funnels through here, and the 3-10 minute pause per stop means the platform fills and empties with each bus.

If you want the rim to yourself, time your arrival for the gap between two loops. There are 48 short-stay spaces at the miradouro but they are reserved, not for general visitors.

Pico da Barrosa

Barrosa is the higher shuttle stop and both the Red and Green lines call here, which makes it the easiest way to see the crater from above. The view takes in the whole caldera and, on the northern slope, the Miradouro da Bela Vista looks out over Ribeira Grande toward the Sete Cidades massif, a stop on the Red Line. Between the two stops you get the lake from above and the coast from the flank, which is most of what a viewpoint visit can deliver.

Clouds move fast at this altitude, so a stopped bus is not always a lost stop.

The beach inside the caldera

The search term praia de lagoa do fogo is real. There is a white sand cove inside the caldera at the lake shore, and it is reached by trail rather than by road, which is why the 12 km circular hike is the only practical way down for most visitors. On bathing, no official page states a rule for the lake, neither a ban nor permission, so this guide states nothing either way.

For bathing that is clearly designated, the island's hot springs pools at Caldeira Velha, Ferraria, Furnas and Poça da Dona Beija are the reliable options.

The two loop lines

Both lines are hop-on/hop-off with pauses of 3-10 minutes per stop, running 09:00-20:00 daily including holidays during the 1 August to 30 September 2026 season. Tickets are bought on the bus. The adult fare is $9.17 (€8), children 7-12 and seniors 65+ pay $4.58 (€4), and under-6s and all Azores residents ride free.

Is it public transport?

The bus is the only public transport into the crater this guide can verify. São Miguel's regular MobiAzores network does not publish a route into the reserve, so if you travel without a car, the shuttle or a tour is the way in. See /azores-without-a-car/ for the wider picture.

Official trail list

PRC02SMI Praia-Lagoa do Fogo is the only officially mapped route to the shore, a 12 km circular of 4 hours at medium grade listed by the parks network. PR41SMI and PRC37SMI appear on the official shuttle page as reachable from the Casa da Água side, but without published lengths, times or grades. The PRC29SMI mix-up

PRC29SMI Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande to Salto do Cabrito is listed on the shuttle page as walkable from the Caldeira Velha stop, a 2 km walk away, but it is a Ribeira Grande trail, not a Lagoa do Fogo trail. Many sites attach it to the crater anyway. If a route description claims a short Fogo lake loop, it is almost certainly repeating this error.

Season and hours

The Shuttle Vulcão do Fogo runs 1 August to 30 September 2026, 09:00-20:00 daily including holidays. A return at reduced hours, 09:00-18:00, is announced for the Easter 2027 school holidays. Outside those windows the shuttle does not run and the road restriction does not apply, but the sources do not spell out winter arrangements, so check the official page before a winter trip.

Parking caps

The official page caps parking at about 200 spaces in total. The Caldeira Velha lot holds 101 spaces, free, and the Casa da Água lot holds 60 spaces, free. The 48 short-stay spaces at the miradouro are reserved for tour operators, travel agencies, taxis and residents.

When the gateway lots fill, the road option is gone, which is the practical case for taking the bus. No crowd numbers are published for any stop.

Two gateways

The north gateway is Caldeira Velha on the Ribeira Grande flank, start of the Red Line, with the hot springs next to the 101-space free lot. The south gateway is Casa da Água at Lagoa, start of the Green Line, with the 60-space free lot. In season, private cars may drive to either gateway and park free, but not across the closed stretch, so choose your end and ride the loop from there.

Tours and pickup

Tours from Ponta Delgada include pickup, so both the biologist-guided tour and the full-day pairing reach the crater with no driving at all. No official driving times between towns and the gateways are published, and we decline to invent them. General island logistics are in /getting-around/.

Time by routing

The shuttle's 3-10 minute stops decide a viewpoint-only visit, you cannot linger at the rim beyond the pause. The trail and the tours set their own clocks instead. No official source publishes a recommended duration for a viewpoint stop, so the half-day figure is our estimate from the loop structure.
