First, the Five Things That Do Not Exist

The negative findings
The Atlânticoline ferry network serves 10 ports: Horta, Madalena, Cais do Pico, Velas, Calheta, Angra do Heroísmo, Praia da Vitória, Vila da Praia, Santa Cruz and Vila do Corvo. No São Miguel port appears in that list, so there is no ferry from Ponta Delgada to anything. Ride-hailing does not exist: Bolt's official Ponta Delgada city page lists only Bolt Food delivery, and Uber has no city page for Ponta Delgada.
No airport bus is confirmed. A route 201 between the airport and Ponta Delgada circulates online but no official source publishes its number, price or timetable. MobiAzores publishes no fares for its buses.
There is no official taxi fare table for Ponta Delgada. And Atlânticoline publishes no static per-route ferry fares, only a dynamic search. The ferry timetable is a dynamic search tool rather than a static page, so car-free travellers price boats by search, not by table.
The taxi gap deserves its own sentence: taxis exist and meet flights, but with no official fare table any taxi price is a negotiated estimate, which is why this page treats them as a bridge, not a system. MobiAzores: What the Bus Network Gives You
São Miguel's buses are run by Varela & Company under the MobiAzores brand, with the network and schedules published on mobiazores.pt. Line numbers are 3-digit (101, 102, 103, 105 and more). Where the bus actually takes you
Sete Cidades village, Furnas and Ribeira Grande are bus towns with real service. Trailheads and viewpoints mostly are not: the network serves settlements, not crater rims. Plan each day so the walk starts in a village the bus reaches, or hand that day to a van tour.
The good news is that the car-free base needs no bus at all. Ponta Delgada is a walking town for its essentials: the Portas da Cidade are an open-air public monument with no gate and no hours, the marina is the same, and the Mercado da Graça on Rua do Mercado, built in 1848, runs Monday to Wednesday 07:30-18:30, Thursday 07:30-19:00, Friday 07:00-19:00, Saturday 07:00-14:00, and closes on Sundays. The Shuttle Vulcão do Fogo: the One Tourist Bus
This is the only official tourist bus product in the Azores, run by the regional government. It is a hop-on/hop-off service with two circular lines of about 60 minutes each. The Red Line runs Caldeira Velha, Miradouro da Bela Vista, Pico da Barrosa and Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo. The Green Line runs the same stops from Casa da Água in Lagoa. Tickets are bought on the bus. Adults pay $9.17 (€8), children 7 to 12 and seniors 65+ pay $4.58 (€4), and under-6s and all Azores residents ride free. Hop-off pauses are 3 to 10 minutes per stop, enough for photographs but not for hiking from the viewpoint.
One point surprises even renters: during the season the Fogo road is closed to private visitors' vehicles, so the shuttle is also the only way a car renter can legally drive that road that season. A Car-Free Day That Works, Step by Step
This is the sourced walking day, built entirely from free official sites. The core is PR03SMI Vista do Rei to Sete Cidades village: linear, easy, 6 km, about 2 hours, free, starting at the Miradouro da Vista do Rei with the crater view at kilometre zero and ending in the village. The honest caveat is bus reachability: getting to the Vista do Rei trailhead by public bus is not guaranteed by any published timetable, so this day works best combined with a Sete Cidades van tour or a rented car day. The day, stop by stop
Pair the walk with the free venues below. Gorreana tea factory visits and tastings are free with no booking. The Arruda pineapple greenhouses are free and open 09:00 to 20:00 from April to September.
The Sete Cidades visitor centre is free, but from 1 November it closes weekends. One expectation to drop: the official Sete Cidades visitor centre rents no kayaks and no bikes, so the kayak offers online are private operators, not an official service.

A Three-Day Car-Free São Miguel That Holds Up
Three days, no rental, every figure sourced: a town day, a west day and an east day, assembled from the published hours and the tour timetable rather than from hope.
Day one, Ponta Delgada on foot
Land, walk, eat. The town gives you the Portas da Cidade, the marina and the market within a stroll, and the pineapple greenhouses of Fajã de Baixo and Rua das Laranjeiras sit at the edge of town: Arruda neighbour Arruda is free and open every day, 09:00-20:00 from April to September. Save the airport bus question by walking out to the info desk on arrival and asking there.
Day two, the west without a wheel
Bus to the Sete Cidades side or take the half-day jeep (#tour-26), then walk the classic: PR03SMI from the Vista do Rei viewpoint down into Sete Cidades village, 6 km, 2h, easy, linear. Day three, the east by van or bus
Furnas is a bus town, so the east day works either way: bus to Furnas for the thermal circuit, or the east van day with lunch (#tour-13) that bundles Furnas and the Nordeste cliffs. In Furnas the choices are documented: Terra Nostra 10:30-16:30 daily, Poça da Dona Beija 08:30-23:00 with last entry 21:30, and the CIAF interpretation centre daily 10:00-18:00 from April to October.
The Other Islands Without a Car
Outside São Miguel the car-free equation gets harder fast. The one genuine network is the Atlânticoline triangle linking Faial, Pico and São Jorge, with Velas and Calheta as the São Jorge ports. There are no static fares, only a dynamic search on the operator site. Terceira is reached by flight, and guided island tours exist there, so you can land and hand the driving over. The far islands of the western and northern groups are flights only. The honest verdict: São Miguel is the only island where car-free works as a default rather than a workaround.

How Winter Changes the Car-Free Math
Car-free travel is more season-sensitive than driving, because the published schedules shift on 1 November and the one tourist bus stops in September. These are the dated changes worth planning around.
The dated shifts
The Fogo shuttle's season ran 1 August to 30 September, so outside that window there is no tourist bus at all, and the road restriction it causes ends with it. The Sete Cidades visitor centre drops weekends from 1 November. Caldeira Velha moves to its winter day of 09:00-17:00.
Arruda closes at 18:00 from November to March. The counterweights that do not change: Poça da Dona Beija runs 08:30-23:00 every day of the year, and Terra Nostra keeps 10:30-16:30 daily with only 25 December closed.
