Caldeira Velha, São Miguel: The Two Tickets, The Time Blocks And The Four Pools

Caldeira Velha is the Monumento Natural da Caldeira Velha, a protected natural monument inside the São Miguel natural park network run by the Azores regional government. It sits on the green northern flank of the Fogo volcano, where the volcanic slopes feed warm, iron-rich water into the stream that runs through the site.

The monument combines an environmental interpretation centre with the bathing area, and the centre is included in both tickets, bathing and visit alike. You do not pay extra to read the exhibition.

One practical note for anyone chasing older links: the former parks domain parquesdaazores.com is dead and no longer resolves. The parks network now lives at parquesnaturais.azores.gov.pt, which is the only address worth bookmarking for the monument and for Lagoa do Fogo above it.

Why this page spends so long on access mechanics: the monument sits on the narrow road that also serves the Fogo caldera, so its front door doubles as the north gateway for Lagoa do Fogo traffic. The regional government's shuttle page says it directly, in shuttle season the monument entrance works as entrada mediante reserva prévia, entry with a prior reservation, and the 101-space lot below it becomes the north park-and-ride for the crater. A visit here is therefore planned twice, once around the 1h30 block you booked and once around the road it stands on.

The iron waterfall and the main pool

The photo you have seen of Caldeira Velha is this one. A warm stream drops over a low, iron-stained rock face, the mineral giving the wall its rusty colour against the green vegetation around it. The bathing pool sits directly beneath the falls, so the waterfall is part of the swimming experience rather than a viewpoint you watch from behind a rail.

It is also the most photographed corner of the site, which is why the early and late time blocks around it fill first. The 100-bather cap applies across all four thermal pools, so the queue pressure at the falls is really a capacity question for the whole bathing area.

The interpretation centre

The centre is included in both tickets, so even a $3.44 (€3.00) visit without bathing gets you in. Its subject is the geology of the Fogo flank and the secondary volcanism that heats the water here, which is exactly the ground you are standing on. It is a small, focused exhibition rather than a large museum, and most visitors move through it on the way to or from the pools.

It does give useful context if you plan to continue to Lagoa do Fogo, the crater lake whose volcanic system this monument belongs to. Nothing about the centre is ticketed separately.

Four thermal pools, one honest naming note

The official site describes the bathing area as quatro poças termais, four thermal pools, and stops there. It does not name the pools individually. The "Azul" and "Castanho" tier names that readers meet on other sites do not exist on the current official pages, and neither do the ticket tiers attached to them, so treat any page built around that split as out of date.

The official site also publishes no per-pool water temperature. What it does publish is the capacity: 100 visitors in the pools at once, 250 total on site. Book a time block and expect all four pools to be one shared bathing area.

Hours run by season. From 1 May to 30 September the monument opens 09:00-20:30, the long window that adds an extra 18:00-19:30 entry block in high season. From 1 to 30 April and 1 to 31 October it opens 09:00-18:30. From 1 November to 31 March it opens 09:00-17:00. The ticket office closes 30 minutes before closing time, so a late arrival cannot buy a block that runs past the official hour.

The site opens every day of the week including holidays, with exactly two fixed closures: 1 January and 25 December. There is a third reason the gates may be shut: the manager may close the facility for weather conditions. That single line on the official horarios page answers most "why is it closed today" searches, alongside the two holiday dates. Check Azores weather before a winter visit for the same reason.

Two caps shape the crowds. The thermal pools hold a maximum of 100 bathers and the whole site holds 250 visitors at any one time. In the 1 May to 30 September season the mid-morning and sunset blocks are the contested ones. No clothing rule is stated on the official pages, and no towel or swim-cap rule appears either.

The monument sits on the road that links Ribeira Grande on the north coast to the Lagoa do Fogo area, which makes it the natural stop on any drive between the two. Its own car park is free and holds 101 spaces per the official shuttle page. The catch is seasonal. During the official Vulcão do Fogo shuttle season, the crossing road is closed to private cars beyond this point and the Caldeira Velha entrance becomes prior-reservation-only, the official wording being entrada mediante reserva prévia, per the official shuttle page. Tour operators, taxis and residents keep access. E-tickets are valid for 1h30 inside the chosen block, bought on the parks bilheteira site. The buy-side mechanics, price bands and reduced tiers are on the tickets twin page. In the Vulcão do Fogo shuttle season, prior reservation is required for entry, so a walk-up is not an option during those weeks.
