The tax on the room is age-tiered too: the Ponta Delgada tourist tax charges guests aged 13 and over only, $2.29 (€2) a night capped at 3 nights, so younger children stay untaxed. Figures in Q3 2026.
The Age Rules That Decide a Family Day
Prices are only half the paperwork. Each venue also publishes an age rule, and those rules decide which day works for which child.
The documented ages
At Caldeira Velha children up to 12 must be accompanied by an adult. On Terceira, under-12s enter Algar do Carvão free with a paying adult, and the 338-step descent takes about 30 minutes. Pico mountain requires minors to be accompanied, with a referenced minimum age of 5 in the access regulation, and climbs are booked through the official portal described on Pico mountain tickets. The islet boat at Vila Franca caps online tickets at 5 per person, so one adult cannot quietly book a whole class.

A family with a five year old can climb Pico in theory but should weigh the 2,350 m altitude and the weather window first. A family with a six year old swims free at Caldeira Velha and rides the Fogo shuttle free, which makes the Lagoa do Fogo day the cheapest big day on the island. Thermal Pools With Children: The Rules That Matter

Terra Nostra, Furnas
The thermal tank sits at 38-42 °C, iron-rich and orange. A shower before and after bathing is mandatory, jumping and diving are banned, and the maximum stay in the tank is 30 minutes. Dark swimwear is advised because the iron water stains light fabrics and can discolour hair and nails.
No swim-cap rule is published. Pool hours match park hours, 10:30-16:30.
Poça da Dona Beija, Furnas
Four pools at about 39 °C. Babies need swim nappies, swimming and diving are not allowed, and the ticket is valid for a maximum stay of 1h30. A swim cap is recommended because the iron water can discolour light or dyed hair, and caps are sold for $1.14 (€1) at reception. Under-2s enter free, which makes this the cheapest hot pool stop for a baby.
Caldeira Velha, Ribeira Grande
The bathing area is four thermal pools under a 100-bather cap, with 250 visitors allowed on site at once. Entry is by timed e-ticket in 1h30 blocks, and the manager may close the facility for weather. During the official Fogo shuttle season the entrance requires a prior reservation.

Tea, pineapple and waterfalls
Gorreana has offered free visits and tea tastings with no booking since 1883, and you can walk the plantations freely. The Arruda pineapple greenhouses are free from 09:00 to 20:00 April to September and pour a free liqueur tasting for the adults. The Boa Fruta plantation runs a free self-guided circuit with information panels.
In Nordeste, the Ribeira dos Caldeirões park is always open with free entry, toilets and a car park, and it is partially visitable with reduced mobility. The Nordeste viewpoints, including Santa Iria and Ponta do Sossego, are free of charge. In Sete Cidades, the visitor centre is free, though it closes weekends from 1 November.

The resident species are common dolphins and common bottlenose dolphins, which are the most reliable animals for children to see. Read the pricing honestly: the swim-with-dolphins products, from $133.16, are a different activity called dolphin swimming, not whale watching. Label them what they are when booking, because a three hour trip sitting in a wetsuit is a different day out for a small child. The licensed framework is the family-relevant part: operators work under the regional decree, so the boat that carries your children meets conduct rules with fines behind them.

The Islet Boat Day: The Trip Kids Remember
The Ilhéu de Vila Franca is a protected crater islet with an interior salt-water lagoon, reached by the official CNVFC boat from Vila Franca do Campo.
The published system
The 2026 season runs 12 June to 11 October, with departures from 10:00 to 17:00 and the last return at 18:10. Access is capped at 400 visitors a day, only 200 people are allowed on the islet at once, and just 100 tickets a day are sold online with a maximum of 5 per person. Online tickets must be validated at the physical box office before boarding, and snorkelling is allowed with mask rental at the ticket office.

Rainy Days: The Indoor Answers the Documents Support

The Mercado da Graça keeps family-friendly hours for a morning browse: Monday to Wednesday 07:30-18:30, Thursday to 19:00, Friday 07:00-19:00, Saturday 07:00-14:00, closed Sundays. It has traded on Rua do Mercado since the building went up in 1848.

What is honestly not published
No stroller or accessibility detail exists on most venue pages. The Ribeira dos Caldeirões park is the one venue stating partial reduced-mobility visitability. For anywhere else, ask the venue before you go, and choose base accommodation with this in mind on where to stay.

Getting Around With Kids
Moving a family around São Miguel is easier with a car, but the car-free tools exist and are documented on Azores without a car and getting around.
The documented options
