Flights to the Azores

The airline's fares page makes Boston the North American anchor. It sells to six islands: Ponta Delgada, Terceira, Santa Maria, Pico Island, Horta on Faial and Flores. Toronto and Montreal also sell to six, swapping Santa Maria for Corvo. Halifax sells to Flores and Corvo only.

The consequence is real for trip planning. You can start a trip on Terceira or Flores without ever backtracking through Ponta Delgada, then hop west or east from there. Book the island that matches your interest, not the island with the airport you assumed.

Two islands sit outside all of this. São Jorge and Graciosa are served from Lisbon and Porto only. No North America flight reaches them directly, so a trip there always includes a mainland connection first.

Lisbon and Porto are the bridge, about 2 hours to Ponta Delgada, with the lowest one-way fare shown from $132.90 (€116). Beyond them the airline lists Faro, Funchal in Madeira, Barcelona, Paris, Madrid, Frankfurt, Berlin, Düsseldorf and Praia in Cape Verde. All sell to Ponta Delgada.

The negative finding is the content here. London appears nowhere on the airline's destination list, so there is no London route to book. UK travellers connect through Lisbon or Porto. Other carriers may serve the route, which this page does not claim either way. TAP's Lisbon service and Ryanair's routes were not verified from official carrier pages in this research pass, so they are not confirmed here either.

The Azores Stopover is a stop of 1 to 7 days in the islands at no extra airfare, available on North America–Europe and North America–Cape Verde itineraries. The airline sells it on the same fares page as the routes above. It applies to the transatlantic lines, so a Boston to Lisbon ticket can include an island pause without an added fare for that leg.

The planning consequence is that the islands work as a stop on a transatlantic trip rather than a destination you must commit to. If you were already flying to Europe, an island week fits inside the ticket you were buying anyway. A Lisbon arrival can still include that week by building the stop on the outbound or the return. Who actually flies there

VisitAzores counts nine airlines serving the archipelago, two hours from Lisbon and Porto and under six from the USA. The airline's own fares page, the source for every figure on this page, sells routes operated by SATA Air Açores and Azores Airlines. The other carriers are not enumerated on that page, and the unverified ones stay unverified here: no TAP or Ryanair route is confirmed on this page because no official carrier page was readable in this research pass.

What the fares page is not

It is not a timetable. It carries no route map, no year-round or seasonal flags, and no booking calendar. Treat it as a live price board: useful for the from-price of a line, silent on how often the line flies.

Every island has an airport, and each one has a name

The main gateway is João Paulo II Airport (PDL) at Ponta Delgada, where most flights to the Azores land. The other eight islands each have their own airport with its own code. Inter-island moves are regional flights via Azores Airlines plus Atlânticoline boats, mainly in the Faial–Pico–São Jorge triangle.

Which airport should you book?

Book PDL unless you are committing the whole trip to one island. Terceira's airport (TER) is the smart entry for a Terceira week built around Angra do Heroísmo, and Flores (FLW) works as a one-way entry with a regional flight out, the shape the long North America list makes possible. The one thing to avoid is chaining two small airports on arrival day, because regional hops wait for the weather and the day has one flight left by evening.

Is it expensive? The numbers say: from $735.63 one way from Boston, from $754.13 from New York, from $132.90 (€116) from Lisbon and from $91.70 (€80) from Funchal. Our estimate, labelled as such, is that total trip cost depends more on how many islands you chain together than on the transatlantic fare itself, because each extra island adds a hop, a transfer and a night. Not confirmed, despite what circulates online: an airport bus. Route 201 and Aerobus figures float around travel sites, and none of them could be verified from an official source, so no route number, price or timetable is printed here. Also not confirmed: a taxi fare table for Ponta Delgada, which no official source publishes, and a count of car-rental agencies at the airport, because the operator page is JavaScript-rendered and returns no content. The honest arrival plan is simple. Arrange the first night's transfer in advance, or book a tour with pickup and let someone else drive. The Azores sit 1 hour behind mainland Portugal. A Lisbon arrival means you lose an hour on the clock, and the last island connection of the day ends earlier than mainland habits suggest. Note that no official page publishes the offset, which is itself worth stating.

Build the hour into any tight same-day connection and read the planning hub before locking flights. The flip side helps on the way home: a return flight that leaves Ponta Delgada at noon lands in Lisbon with the clock jumping forward an hour, which is why afternoon connections on the mainland survive better than morning ones look. The offset itself, UTC−1, is carried on Wikipedia because no official page prints it.
