Best Time to Visit the Azores

One station, nine islands

Every figure on this page is the 1991 to 2020 normal for a single station, Ponta Delgada's Observatório Afonso Chaves, station 513, at 35 metres on the coast of São Miguel. Microclimates are real in the Azores: the caldeiras hold cloud, the north coast takes different weather from the south, and Santa Maria runs warm and dry enough to be called the Island of the Sun. Treat the table as the base-island pattern, not a nine-island promise.

A hybrid series, in IPMA's own word

IPMA labels the series híbrida, meaning it blends observed station data with WRF-modelled values, and notes that figures can shift with quality-control updates. That is why this page quotes the normals to one decimal and never rounds them into slogans: the underlying series itself says it may move.

If warmth is the priority

Pick August. The sea off São Miguel reaches its warmest at about 24.9 °C and the mean daily high is 26.0 °C, the highest of any month. That is real beach weather by Atlantic standards.

If green landscapes matter more

Pick June. Rain has fallen away to 44.4 mm, the lowest outside July, and the mean high of 22.4 °C keeps the hills fresh rather than dry. It is worth stating plainly that no month here is hot: an average year records zero days at or above 30 °C and only 60.8 summer days of 25 °C or more, so every month is comfortable by most visitors' standards.

The extremes stay mild too: the station record high is 30.1 °C, set on 23 August 2011, and the record low is 5.0 °C from 19 January 1991, with zero frost days in an average year.

If you are travelling with children or locking school dates

School calendars force the July and August window, and the normals say it is a good forced choice: 24.7 to 26.0 °C highs, 26.0 to 45.8 mm of rain and the warmest sea of the year. Book the big-name days earlier than you would in June, because the summer shuttle season on the Lagoa do Fogo road and the tour calendars both fill. What the numbers say

No official source names a worst month, so the honest answer is weather-defined. The November to February block carries the highest rain, with monthly totals of 87.2 to 152.8 mm, and December averages 15.0 rain days against July's 4.8. Days are short and the sea sits near its coolest, about 18.6 °C in December on the way down to about 16.6 °C in March.

The practical miseries

Winter rain has real consequences. Caldeira Velha's manager may close the pools for weather conditions, and the official trail site carries closure alerts, so check both before setting out on the hikes you had planned. One offset: the islands sit an hour behind Lisbon, so winter sunrises and sunsets run late by the mainland clock.

Our reading: if a trip depends on crater viewpoints and thermal pools, avoid the November to February block, and check the weather detail before locking dates.

The autumn spike nobody expects

September still behaves like summer (25.0 °C high, 78.2 mm), then October jumps to 118.0 mm while staying warm at a 22.6 °C high. That gap between air and rain is the month most first trips misjudge. If you want the warm sea without the October totals, early September is the compromise, on the same 7-day itinerary shape as a summer trip.

Whales

Whale watching is possible year-round, with more than 20 cetacean species and sightings on 98% of trips, per Visit Azores. Blue whales are easiest at the end of winter, while spotted dolphins and sperm whales show in summer. Season detail on whale watching, or compare the trip from Ponta Delgada.

Hiking

Trails run all year, but access changes with the seasons. During the official shuttle season on the Lagoa do Fogo road, 1 August to 30 September 2026, buses run 09:00 to 20:00 and the non-resident adult fare is $9.17 (€8), while the road itself closes to private vehicles. The sea and the flowers

The sea off São Miguel spans about 16.6 °C in March to about 24.9 °C in August, so swimmers want July or August and surfers pack in any month. The negative finding

Visit Azores writes about the island flowers and publishes no bloom dates anywhere on its pages, including the Flores material. That absence is the finding: the season everyone quotes has no official source behind it.

What that means for your trip

The July-to-August window is what most writing circulates, and any month claim, including that one, is unofficial and should be read as such. If the flowers are the whole point of the trip, build slack into the itinerary rather than betting on a date, and see the Flores island guide.

The verdict

April posts a mean high of 18.8 °C, a low of 13.3 °C and 79.6 mm of rain. It is a good month for quiet trails and green landscapes. The trade-offs are a sea still near its coldest, March averages about 16.6 °C, and changeable weather that can flip between sun and shower in an afternoon.

Against October

October runs warmer at a 22.6 °C high but wetter at 118.0 mm. Choose April for fresh green hills with fewer people, October for warmer air with a real chance of rain. Either month fits the 7-day itinerary without changes.

May as the alternative

May runs a degree or two warmer (20.2 °C high) and drier (61.0 mm) than April, with longer evenings. If your dates flex by a fortnight, May keeps April's quiet-trail advantages with less of its rain. Both months price below the summer window on tours that run all year.

The direct routes

Azores Airlines sells direct to Ponta Delgada from Boston and New York, with lowest one-way fares shown for late-2026 dates from $735.63 out of Boston and $754.13 out of New York. Boston also sells direct to Terceira, Santa Maria, Pico, Horta and Flores, and VisitAzores counts nine airlines serving the archipelago in total. The fares page flags no route as year-round or seasonal, so that is stated plainly here: seasonality is not published.

The stopover trick

The Azores Stopover lets you add 1 to 7 days in the islands at no extra airfare on North America to Europe itineraries. That makes shoulder-season trips easy, because you can plug the islands onto a mainland trip in May or October. What can and cannot be said

No month is officially cheapest. The fares page is a live snapshot, not a calendar of prices, and it shows Lisbon to Ponta Delgada from $132.90 (€116) one way for the dates checked. Our estimate, labelled as such: the November to March window prices lower than the July to August one, but there is no published month table to cite.

No official source publishes a booking window for cheaper fares either, so any book-by date you read elsewhere is advice, not a rule.

What does not change

The costs that hold steady in every month are the Ponta Delgada tourist tax and the regional 16% VAT, both below. The full budget picture sits on azores-costs.

Summer runs longer hours almost everywhere on São Miguel. Caldeira Velha keeps 09:00 to 20:30 from 1 May to 30 September, drops to 09:00 to 18:30 for October, and runs a short 09:00 to 17:00 day from 1 November to 31 March. The Sete Cidades visitor centre flips from daily opening in summer (1 April to 31 October) to weekdays only from 1 November to 31 March, closing Saturdays and Sundays in winter.

The Arruda pineapple plantation closes at 20:00 from April to September, 19:00 in October and 18:00 from November to March.

Two season facts decide bookings rather than hours. The Lagoa do Fogo shuttle season is 1 August to 30 September 2026, with an Easter 2027 school-holiday window also announced, and outside those dates the road rules differ. Terra Nostra releases online tickets only 15 days ahead of the chosen date, so a winter trip books later, not earlier.

The fixed lines

Ponta Delgada charges a tourist tax of $2.29 (€2.00) per guest per night for guests aged 13 and over, capped at 3 nights, in force since January 2025. VAT runs at a 16% normal rate against the mainland's 23%, which quietly lowers every restaurant and hotel bill in any month. The tours, month by month

The three anchor tours are priced in dollars and the listed prices do not vary by month, which makes them the easiest numbers on this page to plan around. A whale trip runs in all twelve months, while the west island van day and the half-day jeep fill fastest in the July and August window.
