The official figures

Corvo is the smallest island of the Azores at 17.1 km², with 430 residents at the 2011 census, and Vila do Corvo is the only town on the island. That is what the official Visit Azores page prints, and this guide uses nothing else. The word most sites reach for, smallest municipality in Portugal, does not appear on the official pages.

That claim rests on Wikipedia and general statistics only, so it is labelled that way here. The island's shape is one volcano. The Caldeirão resulted from the collapse of the top of the central volcano of Corvo, with a maximum diameter of 2.3 km and a depth of 305 m.

Inside it sit a shallow lake and several small volcanic cones, which many say outline the drawing of the Azores Islands. A nine-island archipelago sketched in miniature inside one crater is the reason people cross the water for this island. UNESCO confirmed Corvo as a Biosphere Reserve in 2007, the same year as Graciosa.
