The Price Lives Inside The Booking App

The official portal's public text carries no price, no group size and no gear list. That is by design, because the booking app shows all of it only inside the reservation flow, calculated per date and per category. A figure of €15 (about $17.19) circulates on blogs and forums.

It is NOT official. This page prints it only as what it is, someone else's number with no source you can hold accountable. Do the one thing that always works instead: open the app at montanhapico.azores.gov.pt, enter your date and your category (guided or autonomous), and read the real figure the system quotes you at that moment.

Treat every number you read anywhere else, including this page, as possibly stale. The comparison table above is where the checked figures end. The same logic applies to the gear list and the group-size rules, which also surface only at checkout.

If the app shows a price that differs from anything online, the app wins.

The Booking Form Itself Settles The Guide Debate

The widespread claim that a guide is mandatory does not survive a look at the booking form. The portal offers a category called Subida autónoma sem guia, an autonomous ascent without guide, alongside the guided category. A paid accredited guide is recommended, but it is not shown as strictly mandatory on the portal's landing text.

Full certainty would require reading the Portaria n.º 25/2020 text end to end, which we flag openly here. The practical difference is simple. The guided category buys a professional who carries the safety plan, knows the routing above the 1,250 m start point and makes the turnaround calls.

The autonomous category keeps that responsibility with the climber, together with the navigation and the weather judgement. Both reserve the exact same way, through the same app, at the same portal, and both carry the same mandatory presentation at Casa da Montanha. Choose at booking time, not at the trailhead.

One Official Timing Rule Exists On The Mountain

The portal's stated rule is that night climbs start between 16:00 and 24:00, with a mandatory presentation at Casa da Montanha in Madalena before you go up. Use it like this. Work out the sunrise time for your date, then count backwards through the climb at whatever pace you personally hold, and pick the start slot inside the window that puts your summit at first light.

Reserve that slot. Treat the window as the only official timing on the mountain, because no climb duration is published anywhere and nobody will promise you a summit time. The presentation requirement is part of the same rule, so arrive at Casa da Montanha with margin rather than at the last minute of your window.

If your start slips past 24:00, you are outside the official window, so book a slot you can actually reach from where you sleep on Pico island the night before.

The Legal Text Behind The Booking

Access rules sit in the Regulamento de Acesso à Reserva Natural da Montanha do Pico, Portaria n.º 25/2020, first amended by Portaria n.º 64/2023. On minors, the rule is clear enough: they must be accompanied. The referenced minimum age is 5, but be careful with that figure, because it comes from a search snippet of the Diário da República rather than a full reading of the legal text.

That is why this page flags it instead of asserting it. Before planning a family climb, verify the age rule in the booking app or directly with SRAAC using the contacts below. While you sort the rules, remember the family also has to physically reach the mid-Atlantic.

No Public Gear List Exists

No official page publishes the mandatory gear list in open text. It shows inside the reservation flow, at booking, and that is the only current version. This matters for three reasons.

First, the mountain passes 2300 m, so you are dressing for altitude, not for the coast. Second, the night window means head-torch hours and cold starts in the dark. Third, the weather-call policy, the rule for when the mountain closes for wind or other events, is itself unpublished, so conditions can change the requirements on short notice.

For all three reasons, read the gear list the app shows you at checkout and treat it as binding. We do not reproduce any third-party gear list here as official, because we cannot verify one, and a wrong list at 2300 m in the dark is a safety problem, not a packing detail.

The Mandatory Presentation Point

Casa da Montanha at Madalena is the mandatory presentation point for night climbs and the portal's physical desk on the island. Its contacts are phone (+351) 967 303 519 and email [email protected]. Here is the awkward part: its opening hours are not stated, neither on the portal nor on Visit Azores.

You cannot plan a check-in against a posted schedule, because no schedule is posted. So plan it against your reserved slot instead. Work backwards from your start time inside the 16:00 to 24:00 window, leave enough margin for the drive to Madalena and the check-in paperwork, and confirm by phone the day before.

That confirmation call is our estimate of best practice, not a published rule, but on a mountain where the weather-call policy is also unpublished, a human voice the day before is the cheapest insurance you can buy. SRAAC, Contacts And Two Domain Traps

montanhapico.azores.gov.pt is run by SRAAC, the Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Ação Climática of the Azores Government. Its landing text says the portal exists so climbers can schedule climbs assuring reservation and access. Contacts: phone (+351) 967 303 519, email [email protected].

Now the warning paragraph, because search results will try to mislead you twice. First, picomountain.com is a ski resort in Vermont, USA. It has nothing to do with this mountain, sells no permits and publishes no Azores facts, so ignore it entirely.

Second, the old parks domain parquesdaazores.com no longer resolves at all. The parks network, including Pico's managed sites, lives on parquesnaturais.azores.gov.pt. If an old blog link points you to either dead address, come back to the official portal and the parks site instead.

Land On Pico Or Sail To It

Azores Airlines sells Boston to Pico (PIX) and Toronto and Montreal to PIX, so climbers from North America can land directly on the island without touching São Miguel at all. Better still, the Azores Stopover adds a 1 to 7 day stop in the Azores at no extra airfare on North America to Europe itineraries, which is exactly how a climb gets built into a bigger transatlantic ticket. Reserve your mountain slot first, then shape the flights around it.

By sea, Atlânticoline calls at Madalena and Cais do Pico, which connects Pico into the central-islands triangle. But no static per-route fares or crossing times are published, so budget the ferry inside the operator's own search tool rather than from any article, including this one. One trap to close: there is no ferry from Ponta Delgada to Pico, that move is a flight.
