São Miguel grows the protected PGI Ananás dos Açores fruit, and the Arruda greenhouses in Fajã de Baixo, on the edge of the city, let you walk the full growth cycle for free, from planting to harvest. The house pineapple liqueur tasting in the gift shop is also free, and the kiosk sells juice, cake and cocktails if the afternoon needs rescuing. Hours shift with the seasons: April to September 09:00-20:00, October 09:00-19:00, November to March 09:00-18:00, every day of the week.

Furnas is where the bath belongs in this plan, so treat tonight as the optional taster and keep the real thermal evening for day 3. The rule that catches everyone: tickets are sold exclusively online, never at the door, and every ticket is valid for a maximum stay of 1h30. The site opens daily 08:30-23:00 with last entry at 21:30 and everyone out of the pools by 22:30.

From the platform you look down on the twin lakes, one green and one blue, described on the official visitor centre page as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. It is also the trailhead of the PR03SMI path, an easy 6 km linear descent of about 2 hours that drops from the rim into Sete Cidades village, which is exactly how this day is built.

Arrive early: low cloud can sit on the crater rim even when the city below is sunny, and the viewpoint is the first stop of every tour van on the island.

The walk down from Vista do Rei lands you in the village on the crater floor, beside the lake shore, where the pace slows by design. Two practical facts shape the afternoon. First, the Complexo Ambiental da Lagoa das Sete Cidades visitor centre is free and worth the stop, with a permanent exhibition and a documentary screening, but from 1 November it closes on Saturdays and Sundays entirely, running Monday to Friday only through winter.

If the weather holds and legs remain, the PRC05SMI Serra Devassa trail is an easy 4.2 km circular route of about 2 hours that starts and ends near the parking area by Lagoa do Canário, above the main crater. It strings together smaller lakes above the main crater, away from the village crowd. Trails on the regional parks network carry no fees, so this costs nothing but the time.

What goes wrong: fog, which can erase the ridge views while the village below sits in sun, so keep the loop as the swap-out rather than the anchor.

On the lake shore below the village, the fumarole fields bubble and hiss out of the ground, a zone of secondary volcanism described on the official PRC06SMI trail page, an easy 9.5 km circular route of about 3 hours around Lagoa das Furnas. This is where the caldeiras, the buried pots of the famous cozido stew, sit over the volcanic heat. One honest warning: no official source publishes who cooks the stew, how deep the pots go or for how many hours.

The familiar 6-7 hour figure circulates in media only. Treat any precise claim as folklore and enjoy the steam for what it is. The trail and the fumarole area cost nothing.

The cozido das Furnas is a whole meal slow-cooked by geothermal heat, and lunch in the village is how most visitors meet it. The honest line: no restaurant publishes its menu prices to any official source, and this guide will not invent a figure, so check boards on the day or see the where to eat and Azores food guides for how the dish works. Book the class ahead, because it runs on the hotel's schedule rather than yours.

The garden and its great iron-orange thermal tank are the afternoon anchor of Furnas, open every day 10:30-16:30, with entry allowed up to 30 minutes before closing. The adult ticket is $19.48 (€17) and includes the garden collections, the thermal tank at 38-42°C and the jacuzzis. The booking rule decides your whole day: online tickets are released only 15 days ahead, for a specific date, and the park can feel fully booked if you wait.

If Terra Nostra is sold out, or you would rather understand the valley than soak in it, the Centro de Interpretação Ambiental das Furnas is the official interpretation centre of the Furnas protected landscape. The adult ticket is $3.44 (€3.00), with cheaper junior and senior rates and free entry for young children and Azores residents. Guided visits run 45 minutes and must be booked at least 72 hours ahead.

Hours change with the season: from 1 April to 31 October it opens daily 10:00-18:00, while the winter schedule runs Tuesday to Saturday 09:00-17:00, closed Sunday and Monday. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. The Miradouro do Pico do Ferro above the valley is the official viewpoint pairing.

The Fogo crater lake sits in the middle of the island, and access is the whole story. During the official Shuttle Vulcão do Fogo season, which ran 1 August to 30 September in 2026, the road between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água is closed to private visitors' vehicles, and only tour operators, taxis and residents may drive it. The hop-on hop-off shuttle costs $9.17 (€8) for non-resident adults and $4.58 (€4) for reduced tickets, bought on the bus, running 09:00-20:00 daily in season.

The miradouro itself is free whenever you can reach it. Outside shuttle season the restriction does not apply, but check the current status, because the season window changes every year and an Easter window has been announced.

At the foot of the Fogo road, this natural monument pairs a small interpretation centre with four thermal pools under greenery. The Bilhete Completo, with bathing, is $11.46 (€10) for adults, with cheaper junior and senior tiers and free entry for Azores residents on their first ticket each day. Two rules shape the visit.

Tickets are timed e-tickets valid in 1h30 blocks through the day, and the pools carry a cap of 100 bathers, with 250 visitors total on site. During the shuttle season, entry is by prior reservation only, so book before you drive. From 1 May to 30 September the site runs 09:00-20:30, and from 1 November it drops to 09:00-17:00.

The manager may close the site for weather.

The north coast's main city makes a natural afternoon stop, and walking it costs nothing. It sits on the same coastal road as the tea country, so the pairing with Gorreana needs no detour, and it is the practical town for a late lunch after a morning of timed tickets and shuttle seats. The city also sits below the Fogo road you have just driven, which makes the geography of the day read clearly from the waterfront.

Gorreana has produced tea since 1883 and calls itself the oldest tea plantation in Europe, now in its fifth family generation. Visits and tea tastings are free, need no reservation, and you can walk the plantations freely, following a self-guided circuit through the withering, rolling, oxidation, drying and sorting rooms, with a museum and a tea bar at the end. The gap in the information is real: the factory publishes no opening hours anywhere on its site and says nothing about which days the machines actually run, so treat any weekday claim as unverified.

Go in daylight, expect free tea, and let this close the four-day loop gently.

The protected islet off Vila Franca do Campo holds a salt-water lagoon inside an old volcanic crater, and the official CNVFC boat crossings run 12 June to 11 October. Numbers are tight: 400 visitors per day maximum, only 200 on the islet at once, and just 100 tickets per day sold online, up to five per person, which must be validated at the physical box office before boarding. There are no reservations beyond that, and boats depart from 10:00 to 17:00 on a published schedule.

The fare itself appears only inside the booking flow, so this guide states no figure. What goes wrong: assuming you can book ahead for the whole season. Only that 100-ticket daily quota is sellable online.

The wild east of the island costs nothing and asks nothing, which makes Nordeste the natural filler whenever another plan collapses.
