Sete Cidades, São Miguel: The Twin Lakes And What They Cost (Nothing)

The most famous viewpoint here carries a royal name. According to the parks trail page, King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amélia visited the rim on 6 July 1901, and the Miradouro da Vista do Rei, the King's View, has carried that visit in its name ever since. The platform at the viewpoint is also the official start of the PR03SMI trail down to the village, so the 1901 stop and the modern hike begin on the same patch of gravel.

The regional parks centre page goes further and describes Lagoa das Sete Cidades as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. That is the parks network's own framing, and it is the reason the twin lakes appear at the top of almost every São Miguel itinerary. One gap worth stating plainly: the official pages describe the lake and its crater but print no explanation of the famous two-colour water, so this guide repeats none of the mineral or light stories that circulate elsewhere.

The village of Sete Cidades sits inside the crater itself, on the lake shore, at the end of the PR03SMI descent. It is a working parish with a beach on the lake, not a purpose-built viewpoint stop, which is why the trail that ends there is the most logical way to arrive. Vista do Rei

This is the view over the twin lakes and the easiest to reach, since a road runs right to the rail. The name honours King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amélia, who visited the rim on 6 July 1901 according to the official trail page, and the platform is the signed start of PR03SMI, so you can park here and walk the 6 km down into the village instead of driving on. Coaches work the rim from late morning, so come early for the rail line to yourself.

Boca do Inferno

Miradouro da Boca do Inferno appears on the official São Miguel points of interest list of the parks network, and it is the second name most visitors search for around the crater. One honest caveat from this guide's research: its individual official page could not be fully verified, because the parks site blocked the fetch, so treat any published detail about access or viewing conditions found elsewhere with care and confirm on site. The viewpoint itself, like the rest of the rim, costs nothing.

The village and the lake shore

The parish village sits on the crater floor by the lake, with a parish beach and the shore as its main draw, and it is where the PR03SMI trail ends. One finding worth stating plainly: kayak rentals are not an official service here. The visitor centre's official services list includes no watersports at all, so the kayak offers you find online are private tour operators.

If you want the hour on the water, the double kayak rental at $22.96 is the option that books ahead, and the village shore costs nothing at any hour.

All three trails are free to walk and all three are waymarked by the São Miguel natural park.

Where they start and the shuttle problem

The Serra Devassa loop starts and ends near the Parque Florestal da Mata do Canário by Lagoa do Canário, which makes it the simplest of the three to arrange without a second car. PR03SMI and PR04SMI are both linear and finish in the village, so somebody has to collect you or you retrace your steps. Trailheads and trails are free, with no fee published anywhere on the parks site.

The Complexo Ambiental da Lagoa das Sete Cidades is the official visitor centre, and entrance is free. Its hours are 09:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:00, with a lunch break in between. From 1 April to 31 October it opens every day of the week. From 1 November to 31 March it drops weekends entirely: Monday to Friday only, closed Saturdays and Sundays, and also closed on 1 January and 25 December. That winter weekday-only rule catches more visitors than any other detail on this page, because it is the opposite of what a weekend tripper expects.

The official services list is modest and worth knowing before you go: a permanent exhibition, a documentary screening, a picnic area and an accessible WC, with material in Portuguese and English. There is no kayak rental and no bike rental at the centre, so any watersports or wheels offer you see online belongs to a private operator, not the park.

On crowds, the honest framing is a pattern rather than a number, because the parks site publishes no visitor counts. Coaches work the rim from late morning, so the Vista do Rei rail line forms before noon and thins in the afternoon. The trails clear out within minutes of the car parks. A rental car is the practical way to reach Sete Cidades, because it lets you chain the rim viewpoints and the trailheads in one day at your own pace. One negative finding from the official sources: no parking price and no parking capacity is published anywhere for the rim lots, so budget nothing and expect open ground rather than a managed car park.

If you would rather not drive, the guided tours solve it. Both the 8-hour west van tour and the 4-hour private tour include hotel pickup from Ponta Delgada, which removes the road question entirely.

For the bus option, the honest status is this: no bus route to the lakes could be verified from the official sources this guide uses. São Miguel buses run under the MobiAzores brand, but its published material carries no Sete Cidades timetable a visitor can plan a crater day around, so do not build the day on one. Three ways to shape the day

One logistics note decides most itineraries: PR04SMI is linear and finishes in the village, 11 km from its Mata do Canário trailhead, so your turnaround plan, a second car or a pre-arranged pickup, decides whether the long trail is feasible at all.
