Azores Cost: Taxes, Entry Fees and Day Budgets

Ponta Delgada charges a tourist tax, the Taxa Turística, in force since January 2025 under Regulamento n.º 1300/2024. It is €2.00 per guest per night, capped at three nights, so the most any one guest pays per stay is €6. The tax applies to guests aged 13 and over.

Camping and caravaning are taxed at a lower €1 per night. Anyone under 13 is not taxed at all. The municipality runs an official payment portal for accommodation providers, which tells you the tax is collected at your lodging rather than at a kiosk, and other municipalities write their own rules, so ask at check-in outside the capital.

Add $2.29 (€2) a night to any Ponta Delgada stay when you total the trip, and choose the base with where to stay.

Value added tax in the Azores is lower than on the mainland of Portugal. The normal rate is 16 percent, cut from 18 percent on 1 July 2021 by the regional government. There is a 9 percent intermediate band and a 4 percent reduced band.

On the mainland the same bands run 23, 13 and 6 percent. That seven-point gap is one structural reason the answer to whether an Azores cost runs high is often gentler than visitors expect. It does not print a menu for you, though: restaurant and café prices are not published by any state body, so no official price list exists anywhere, and any meal range you read elsewhere is an estimate.

The thermal water is the signature experience on São Miguel and every venue publishes its own ticket table. Parque Terra Nostra in Furnas charges adults 18 to 64 $19.48 (€17.00), youth and seniors $16.62 (€14.50), and a family of two adults with two children $65.30 (€57.00), with an extra youth on the family ticket at $14.90 (€13.00). Online tickets open only 15 days ahead of your chosen date, and the park runs 10:30 to 16:30 daily.

The ticket covers the garden and the thermal tank. Poça da Dona Beija, also in Furnas, sells exclusively online: $13.75 (€12) for entry until 17:30 and $18.34 (€16) from 18:00, with children 2 to 6 at $11.46 (€10) and $16.04 (€14) in the evening. Under 2s are free and the stay is capped at 1h30.

Towels cost €4 plus a $22.90 (€20) cash deposit, and a swim cap, recommended because the iron-rich water stains hair, is sold for €1. Caldeira Velha near Ribeira Grande is the regional government venue: the complete bathing ticket is $11.46 (€10.00) for adults, $5.73 (€5.00) junior and senior, a no-bath visit $3.44 (€3.00), and the family no-bath ticket $5.73 (€5.00), with a locker at $2.29 (€2.00). The site caps bathers at 100 in the pools.

Ferraria is the outlier: the natural ocean pool depends on the tide, and the spa's hours and prices are not published on the official parks network or in its online ticket office. Plan your bathing days with the hot springs overview.

A surprising share of the budget can be zero. Gorreana, producing tea since 1883, lets you walk the factory rooms and the plantations and taste the tea for free, with no booking needed. The Arruda pineapple greenhouses in Fajã de Baixo are free and open every day, from 09:00 to 20:00 between April and September, 09:00 to 19:00 in October and 09:00 to 18:00 from November to March, with a free tasting of the house pineapple liqueur.

The Boa Fruta plantation offers a free self-guided circuit with information panels and QR codes. The Sete Cidades visitor centre is free, though from 1 November it closes on weekends. The Nordeste viewpoints, including Santa Iria and Ponta do Sossego, carry no fees anywhere on the parks network.

The one small charge on this list is the CIAF interpretation centre in Furnas at $3.44 (€3.00).

Leave São Miguel and the ticket table changes. On Terceira, Algar do Carvão charges $11.46 (€10.00) per person, with under-12s free with a paying adult, and the visit means descending 338 steps into a volcanic chimney. Gruta do Natal on the same island is $10.31 (€9.00), cash or Mastercard or Visa but no Amex, no reservations, and a capacity of 80 people inside.

In Horta on Faial, the Scrimshaw Museum inside Peter Café Sport is $4.01 (€3.50) and closes on Sundays. On Graciosa, Furna do Enxofre has a full ticket of $4.01 (€3.50) with guided visits booked 72 hours ahead. Two Faial and Pico items are open questions: the Capelinhos volcano interpretation centre has conflicting third-party prices and no confirmed official figure, and the Pico mountain climb price lives inside the official booking app, where third-party numbers circulate but nothing is published on the fetchable pages.

The flight dominates any azores cost. The figures below are the lowest one-way fares shown on the Azores Airlines fares page for late-2026 travel dates, a live snapshot rather than a timetable, so treat them as a floor. Lisbon to Ponta Delgada starts from $132.90 (€116), as does Porto.

Funchal to Ponta Delgada is cheaper from $91.70 (€80). From North America, Boston starts from $735.63, New York from $754.13, Toronto from CA$746 and Montreal from CA$747. Ground transport is where the Azores cost picture gets murky, because several prices simply are not published. The official Shuttle Vulcão do Fogo, running 1 August to 30 September 2026 from 09:00 to 20:00, charges $9.17 (€8) for non-resident adults and $4.58 (€4) for non-resident children 7 to 12 and seniors, free for under-6s and all Azores residents, with tickets bought on the bus. MobiAzores publishes schedules on its official site but no fares.

Taxis have no official fare table for Ponta Delgada. There is no ride-hailing, since Bolt lists only its food delivery service for the city. The Atlânticoline ferry network serves ten ports and none of them is on São Miguel, and the operator publishes no static fares, only a dynamic search tool.

In practice the cheapest sourced ground price on São Miguel is the shuttle, and for everything else you either rent a car or work around it with the car-free plan.

The gaps in this page are as practical as the figures. No state body in Portugal publishes hospitality prices, so there is no official coffee, meal or menu list for the Azores anywhere: any dinner figure you read on a blog is an estimate, and the only published anchor for eating is the food culture itself rather than a tariff. The same discipline applies to transport and tickets.

MobiAzores shows the network and the timetables but no fare table. Ponta Delgada taxis have no official fare table at all, so agree the price before you get in. Atlânticoline publishes no static per-route fares, its timetable is a dynamic search tool, and its ten-port list includes no São Miguel port.

Ferraria's thermal spa is absent from the regional parks' own online ticket office, with no published hours or prices. The Mount Pico climb price sits inside the official booking application and is not printed on any fetchable page. The Capelinhos centre's official page blocks automated readers and third-party figures conflict.

The Ilhéu de Vila Franca boat price appears only inside the CNVFC club's booking flow, after you pick a date. Where this page prints a number, the number comes from a published official table or the tour platform. Where it prints nothing, nobody publishes it, and that is the finding to plan around.

At the top sits the full-day all-in-one tour of São Miguel at $91.83 for eight hours, rated 4.9 from 184 reviews, and that figure is the benchmark: a guided whole-island day costs about the same as the evening baths.
